Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Zitzmann

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Michael Zitzmann is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the fields of andrology, endocrinology, diabetology, and sexual medicine. For three decades, he has combined cutting-edge research, clinical guideline development, and clinical experience with a holistic perspective on men’s health across all stages of life. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Zitzmann practices at a private endocrinology clinic in Münster.

MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC FOCUS AREAS

His work focuses on hormonal disorders, sexual dysfunction, metabolic diseases, fertility disorders, and healthy aging in men. Particular areas of focus include functional hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, obesity-associated hormonal changes, and the development of hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptive methods for men, as well as the research and treatment of fatigue and exhaustion syndromes. As an endocrinologist, he also specializes in osteoporosis and disorders of the thyroid, adrenal glands, and pituitary gland.

ADVISORY ROLES FOR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES

Prof. Zitzmann serves as an official advisor and medical guidebook author for the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) on topics related to men’s health and contraceptive development. He also advises the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) on testosterone preparations, as well as the German Diabetes Association and the German Obesity Society.

GUIDELINES, COMMITTEES & INTERNATIONAL ROLES

He is a lead and contributing author of numerous international clinical guidelines, including the EAA Guideline on Functional Hypogonadism, the EAA Guideline on Klinefelter Syndrome, and AWMF guidelines on gynecomastia.

He serves as Vice President of the American Androgen Society, is a board member of the International Society of Andrology, serves on the board of the German Obesity Foundation, and is the European representative of the Male Contraception Initiative.

ACADEMIC IMPACT & AWARDS

Prof. Zitzmann is Editor-in-Chief of the international medical journal The Aging Male. His scientific work includes more than 160 publications indexed in PubMed, over 12,000 citations, and an h-index of 60. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM) and received an honorary doctorate in 2024 from the oldest university in Romania, in Iași.

In 2024, he received the Dedication to Education Award from the American Androgen Society.

More recently, Michael Zitzmann was elected to the leadership committee of the American Endocrine Society’s Special Interest Group “Male Health.” He will serve on the committee alongside Shalender Bhasin of Harvard Medical School.
